Cradlepoint's NetCloud Service for Mobile Enhances First Responder Communication Capabilities

A fire department serving 100,000 citizens faced a crucial challenge in modernizing its aging command and control vehicle (CCV) to coordinate fire and rescue services and access mission-critical data effectively. Their existing hardware could not support multiple in-vehicle devices and had limited to no 4G/5G access to a single computer. Their team also lacked a cloud-based network management platform for streamlined device installation and upgrades.

In response, the department implemented a comprehensive networking solution featuring Cradlepoint's NetCloud Service for Mobile and a ruggedized in-vehicle router equipped with built-in LTE, dual modems, multiple WAN/LAN ports, robust Wi-Fi, and centralized cloud-based network management.

The Challenge

Keeping Up With Technological Advances to Provide Mission-Critical Communications

Previously, the department had employed state-of-the-art technology within their CCV vehicle, utilizing wireless networking equipment, including digital radio for effective interagency communication and 4G for network connectivity. However, as technology continued to advance, these once cutting-edge solutions began to fall short in supporting the latest array of connected devices.

Although the digital radio system effectively facilitated interagency voice communication, it was inadequate for transmitting mission-critical data due to limitations in bandwidth and speed. While the flexibility of the 4G connection offered advantages, the networking device had a drawback - it could only connect to a single computer, which meant that data from essential systems like auto vehicle location (AVL), GPS, and other onboard sensors remained inaccessible.

Within the rear of each CCV was a control center featuring a spacious monitor, versatile multi-function printer, mobile data terminal (MDT), and other networked devices. However, this connectivity was unattainable without a router with ethernet and serial ports. Additionally, attempting to upload or retrieve sizable video files in the field often surpassed the data limits imposed by SIM cards.

The Solution

Cradlepoint's NetCloud Service for Mobile With Ruggedized Routers

To circumvent the significant costs associated with upgrading the obsolete command and control equipment, the agency concluded that procuring a new CCV was the best step to outfitting responders with the most up-to-date mission-critical technology.

The fire department opted to enhance the versatility and dependability of cellular connectivity for their new CCV by implementing Cradlepoint's NetCloud Service for Mobile in conjunction with ruggedized Cradlepoint R1900, R2100, and IBR1700 wireless routers.

These all-in-one units (cellular, wi-fi, and gps) come equipped with a built-in 4G LTE/5G modem, provisions for a secondary modem, such as the Cradlepoint MC400-5G (specifically for the IBR1700) and the RX30 (specifically for the R1900), multiple ethernet and serial ports, GPS functionality, and robust Wi-Fi coverage that extends well beyond the vehicle itself.

NetCloud empowers the department to centrally oversee connectivity, security, and other aspects for all their CCVs directly from their headquarters.

The Results

Reliable and Pervasive LTE Connectivity For Mission-Critical Communications

This strategic upgrade provided reliable and pervasive LTE connectivity, empowering on-scene crews with real-time operational data and expanding command and control capabilities. It also allowed for seamless device networking and rapid integration of new tools. At the same time, NetCloud's features streamlined network support and paved the way for future life-saving technology enhancements within their vehicles.

The extensive LTE connectivity offered ensures that the on-scene emergency response teams derive substantial benefits from the availability of real-time operational data, allowing them to expand their command and control capabilities.

With this advanced networking solution, essential devices within the CCV can seamlessly interconnect, enabling efficient data sharing and communication. Moreover, the system's agility allows for the swift integration of new tools as they become available, enhancing the department's adaptability in responding to evolving challenges.

The Benefits

Real-Time Data Access, Seamless Technology Integrations, and Powerful Connections

Additionally, NetCloud features provide a more streamlined network and device support system and open possibilities for incorporating additional life-saving technologies into their vehicles. This forward-looking approach ensures that the department remains well-prepared to meet the ever-evolving demands of its community for years to come.

Continuous Access To Real-Time Data

Thanks to the highly dependable mobile broadband connectivity, on-site commanders can harness the capabilities of advanced digital applications and gain immediate access to mission-critical data. This includes detailed interactive maps, providing them with actionable insights that streamline the coordination of emergency personnel.

Seamless Integration Of New Technology

Leveraging the multiple ethernet and serial ports available on Cradlepoint routers, the department's IT team has successfully interconnected onboard monitors, computers, and other essential technology vital for command and control operations. The robust in-vehicle Wi-Fi, facilitated by NetCloud Manager (NCM), also simplifies the integration of additional devices into the CCV as needed.

Smooth Transition Between Two Carriers

When the vehicle enters an area with limited coverage or experiences a weak connection, the router is prearranged to transition seamlessly from one carrier to another, guaranteeing uninterrupted connectivity. This capability is achieved by utilizing two modems integrated into a single router.

Wi-Fi-As-Wan For Substantial File Uploads

When within a station's range, the Cradlepoint router is programmed to automatically switch from a cellular connection to utilize the Wi-Fi-as-WAN feature. This feature is advantageous for uploading sizable video files and preventing costly data overages.
