Backup Connectivity and Cost-Effective Data Usage for Grain Drying Operations

Grain Systems (GSI) is a company that demonstrates the benefits of IoT-enabled devices and remote monitoring in agriculture. Their line of continuous flow grain dryers have been a staple of the agricultural industry for the past decade.

For those who don’t work in agriculture, a grain dryer is a combination of a large furnace and fans that, as you might have guessed, dries harvested grain for optimal moisture levels.

If you’re in agriculture, when it comes time to dry your grain this fall, you can count on GSI’s patented technological innovations to achieve optimal moisture levels for your harvested grain. For GSI, it all begins with their Vision Network Dryer Control™, and its easy-to-read graphical display screen.

This feature comes standard on all GSI grain dryers—from their portable models to their massive tower dryers—GSI Vision control panels give you unique insight into everything going on inside your grain dryer.

Your GSI control panel shows your grain temperature, the moisture coming in and out of your dryer, as well as your temperature out reading. The data from your dryer is logged every minute, giving you the most up-to-date information regarding the status of your grain.

In addition to its touch-screen control, GSI grain dryers come with a 32-bit microprocessor, a log of all shutdowns, a safety disconnect, and a low-voltage safety circuit.

As an optional feature, all GSI grain dryers come with a WatchDog™ remote dryer monitor. WatchDog enables the remote monitoring of a number of essential dryer functions from your smartphone or tablet. The moisture and temperature of your grain, as well as the status of your dryer, can be controlled from the comfort of your home or anywhere on the farm.

The Benefits of Remote-Monitored Grain Dryers

Most farm workers can probably point out the biggest benefit of remote monitoring of the grain drying process—sleep!

GSI Grain Dryers run for hours at a time. During harvest season, those on a farm will tell you that monitoring grain for weeks on end leaves them like zombies. Having to consistently walk out or drive to your grain dryer in the middle of the night is not a pleasant experience.

The WatchDog™ system allows growers to check the status of their grain at any time day or night. Remote monitoring gives growers their lives back during harvest season.

Of course, running a GSI grain dryer with Watchdog remote monitoring requires a stable broadband connection. If your connectivity is jeopardized, your GSI grain dryer with remote monitoring won’t work.

At USAT, we offer growers the primary and backup connectivity they need to run GSI grain dryers or any other IoT-enabled farm equipment and devices. Our AirLink RV50X Industrial Gateway is one of the lowest power and most rugged LTE gateways. With simple installation, the AirLink RV50X is the perfect solution for growers looking to maximize connectivity on their farms.

We also offer growers Express M2M, which delivers a full-service solution for all your connectivity needs. With Express M2M, growers can easily purchase cellular gateways for their farms and are provided with configuration services and monthly data plans at the same time.

Depending on your farm’s connectivity needs, you may need multiple ruggedized routers. On the other hand, you might only need a simple SIM combined with a cost-effective network service. In the case of the latter, Express M2M from USAT might deliver the perfect solution for your agricultural enterprise.
