AirLink® MG90 for EMS Vehicle Management

CONSOLIDATING COMMUNICATIONS WITH MOBILE ROUTERS
IT Director EMS Agency

Meet Jason

Jason is the IT team lead for an EMS agency. When he’s not fixing computers and addressing telephone issues at the authority, he’s helping paramedics in the field with non-responsive communications systems. With Jason and his team being spread very thin, he was tasked upgrading their communications technologies in a way that would make them easier for him to manage.

The Challenge

Poor Connectivity and Network Management Causing Downtime

Jason’s IT team is understaffed and under lot of pressure from top brass to ensure paramedics have high performing communications systems that enable them to arrive to emergencies properly informed and equipped to respond. Their current ambulances use consumer grade routers that can only run on a single network and easily lose connectivity in harsh mobile environments. Also, the management platform makes it impossible to troubleshoot the source of issues remotely, which results in ambulances being called back to the station.

The Solution

MG90 Routers and LTMG Antennas for EMS Vehicle Communications

Jason spoke with the team at USAT about the connectivity issues, and we suggested they try a multi-network solution from Sierra Wireless - The AirLink MG90 - which connects to multiple cellular networks, and can switch between wide area networks in “sub-second” time-frames. Along with the MG90’s end-to-end network management tool, AirLink Mobility Manager (AMM), they would be able to receive instant network insight and control from the enterprise.

Each router is purpose built for rugged environments with IP64 rated aluminum die-cast housings that meet MIL-STD-810G standards. And with AirLink Connection Manager (ACM) the MG90 5G delivers end-to-end VPN security to further protect confidential patient data. Every AirLink MG90 can be configured to run within a private network (CBRS Band 48), further increasing the reliability of the wireless connections. And with LTMG608 antennas from Mobile Mark, the USAT team explained that his vehicles could expect to receive a significant boost in cellular signal strength and WiFi coverage.

The Results

Reduced Downtime, Remote Management, and Improved Patient Care

Jason ordered the new 5G model of the AirLink MG90 with two especially configured Mobile Mark antennas per vehicle. Within one month of installation within their ALS and BLS vehicles the majority of the agency’s simple connection issues disappeared. Jason and his team could now remotely monitor, control and manage the connectivity of paramedics’ communications systems from their office. With more time on their hands due to the reduction in technical issues, his team is excited about the possibility of supporting new mobile applications and new networks without having to adjust in-vehicle platforms or back-end management systems.
