On March 7, 2017 Verizon notified its customers that it will stop issuing new public static IPv4 addresses as of June 30, 2017. This bulletin provides information and recommendations for Sierra Wireless router users who may be affected by this change.
Please note that the following customer applications are not affected by this change and do not require any action at this time:
 

• Subscriptions utilizing a Verizon Private Network
• Subscriptions using dynamically assigned IP addresses
• Applications where all connections are initiated by either the cellular router or a device attached to the router’s

 
Customers remotely connecting to IPv6 capable devices attached to the Sierra Wireless router’s LAN will be able to use ALEOS 4.8.0 and MGOS 4.1 to enable direct IPv6 connectivity. Customers remotely connecting to all other devices or applications running on the router itself (e.g., ACEmanager or Serial PAD) will require an alternative solution such as a VPN or GRE tunnel.

This bulletin applies to the following Sierra Wireless products: LS300, GX400, GX/ES440, GX/ES450, RV50, RV50X, MP70, oMG500/2000 and MG90.
 

Recommended Actions

Communicating with IPv6 capable devices

 
As indicated above, the upcoming releases of ALEOS 4.8.0 and MGOS 4.1 will include IPv6 gateway support. Specifically, this includes the following functionality:
 

1. Simultaneous support for IPv4 and IPv6 (IPv4v6)
2. IPv6 address and DNS configuration for devices on the LAN using SLAAC (GX/ES450, RV50, RV50X, MP70 and MG90) or DHCPv6 (MG90 only)
3. Forwarding of IPv6 packets between the LAN and WAN
4. Blocking of incoming IPv6 traffic unless it is related to an existing connection initiated by a device on the LAN (MG90 only)

 
If a device connected to the Sierra Wireless router’s LAN is compatible with this functionality, customers will be able to obtain direct connectivity to the device using IPv6.
 
The following table provides information on when IPv6 gateway functionality will be available on each of the affected products:
 

Communicating with non-IPv6 capable devices and applications on the router

 
Applications running on the router itself (e.g., ACEmanager and Serial PAD) are not IPv6 capable. Customer deployments requiring remotely initiated connections to these applications or non-IPv6 capable devices on the LAN will not be able to make use of the IPv6 functionality in ALEOS 4.8.0 and MGOS 4.1. Sierra Wireless is working closely with Verizon to determine a recommend solution for these use cases.
