Coastal Carolina University is a dynamic public institution located in Conway, just minutes from the resort area of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Their School of the Coastal Environment offers an array of internship, research, and international opportunities for students, as well as doctoral programs in coastal and marine systems science. Good science includes data-intensive evidence collecting, and with their close proximity to coastal environments, students and faculty can collect data first-hand.

The Challenge

Increasing Field Connectivity to Improve Data Collection

Robbie Moorer, a Datasonde Technician at CCU, cites his favorite part of his job is seeing students grow their instrumentation skills while learning the technical side of data collection and analysis.

“A lot of students understand the data analysis portion of research but do not realize how much instrumentation is involved in data collection,” says Mr. Moorer.

Mr. Moorer and the schools’ masters candidates venture off to collect data at sites up and down the coast — sites notorious for poor cellular reception. In order for students and faculty to transmit data in real-time, they need to be able to reliably connect to the internet while out in the field.

After attempting to connect their equipment out at an elevation point in the wetland areas of Mud Bay in Georgetown, SC, his team needed specialized communications equipment to make their data flow seamlessly back to campus. After reaching out to the solutions engineers at USAT, he worked with us to upgrade their customized portable backpack connectivity solution.

AirLink RV50X for Mobile Survey Communications

Primary power was to be provided by a lightweight and rechargeable battery pack. Connectivity was to be provided by a rugged, compact, and low power AirLink RV50X cellular router stocked at USAT. To reliably boost cellular connectivity, USAT provided a Poynting OMNI-402 Marine Antenna.

And while the RV50X can provide GPS, obtaining pin-point accuracy for the data they collect is key. Because of that advanced need, they opted for a more precise GNSS tool — the C-Nav3050 and its associated antenna kit.

After expertly upgrading the schools’ backpack with the new equipment, custom mounts, and cabling he was able to power up the schools’ portable communications kit to quickly connect smart devices in the field. They plan to use it for a wide variety of projects, as almost every masters thesis requires students to visit an elevation point and perform coastal surveying along the beach.
