Eairlink.com Will Shut Down July 1, 2023

Sierra Wireless customers utilizing the ALEOS supported Dynamic Domain Name Server (DDNS) to access their ALEOS routers should be aware of some changes coming to the DDNS offering, including the full shutdown of eairlink.com as of July 1, 2023.

Background

Cellular routers are assigned a static or dynamic WAN IP address by their cellular carrier. If your ALEOS router has an Internet routable IP address you may choose to use an ALEOS supported Dynamic Domain Name Server (DDNS) to access your ALEOS routers via a fully qualified domain name (FQDN).

Sierra Wireless has historically provided a free DDNS located at eairlink.com for DDNS testing and trials of ALEOS-powered AirLink routers. Our DDNS is unmonitored and has been provided without any service level commitments or uptime expectations and may go offline periodically and without notice. Our DDNS should not be used in any mission-critical customer applications, and we recommend that customers use an alternative commercial DDNS.

IP Manager is a Sierra Wireless proprietary protocol for supporting a DDNS via a configurable IP Manager capable server.

What Is DDNS?

Cellular carriers assign static or dynamic WAN IP addresses to cellular routers. For customers with ALEOS routers with an Internet routable IP address, you may use an ALEOS-supported DDNS via a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).

In the past, Sierra Wireless has offered customers the use of eairlink.com - a free DDNS for testing and trials of ALEOS-powered AirLink routers. This service is unmonitored and has no service-level commitments and are not intended to be used for mission-critical applications.

This bulletin outlines two important changes to the ALEOS DDNS feature:

Changes To DDNS Eairlink.com

This Sierra Wireless operated domain and server instance supporting the IP Manager protocol will be shutting down on July 1, 2023.

Changes To IP Manage Configuration

Customers using our public DDNS server eairlink.com will need to migrate to an alternate DDNS provider prior to our DDNS server shutdown.

ALEOS routers configured with the IP Manager protocol operating in a customer’s private domain are not affected and will continue to operate. Note – Sierra Wireless neither recommends nor provides support for IP Manager DDNS configurations

Action Required

Before July 1, 2023, customers of AirLink ALEOS who currently utilize our "eairlink.com" DDNS service must take the following steps:

  • Select a new DDNS provider that ALEOS supports.
  • Agree to the commercial terms and conditions of the chosen DDNS provider.
  • Update the configuration of their AirLink ALEOS routers to use the new DDNS provider.

It is crucial for customers to update their router's DDNS configuration, as failure to do so may result in the loss of router functionality.

Please refer to the Sierra Wireless Technical Bulletin "ALEOS DDNS EOL" for detailed information regarding the end-of-life of ALEOS DDNS.

Note that you can update the DDNS configuration of all your ALEOS routers remotely/over-the-air using our AirLink Management Service (ALMS). For customers not using ALMS today, this is a great opportunity to realize the benefits of managing ALEOS devices remotely. ALMS greatly simplifies managing AirLink devices, can save the cost of a truck-roll, and can keep ALEOS devices up to date with the latest ALEOS firmware and security updates.

We want to highlight that our AirLink Management Service (ALMS) offers the convenience of remotely updating the DDNS configuration of all your ALEOS routers. This presents an excellent opportunity for customers who are not currently using ALMS to experience the benefits of remote management for their ALEOS devices.

ALMS simplifies the management of AirLink devices, eliminates the need for costly truck rolls, and ensures that your ALEOS devices are always up to date with the latest ALEOS firmware and security updates. Take advantage of this feature to streamline your operations and enhance efficiency.
